Space planning and having a good floor plan can improve your life.

Interior Design can Improve Your Life and Relieve Stress

We changed this little-used dining room into a conversation room. This room has a stress-free feel to it.

Your environment will affect how you feel.

Interior Design is not just about making your home beautiful.  There is much more to it.

These are some of the things that affect your environment and can improve your life:  function, space planning, comfort, organization, color, safety, lighting, romance, personal identity, and entertainment.

In this series of blogs, we will discuss how each one of these can improve your environment and your life.

Stress–everyone has it but no one likes it.  Having a good interior design in your home will help cut down on your stress.  You are affected by having enough room, having colors you like, and feeling comfortable in your home.

One of the most important ways that having a designer will help you is to have a good floor plan for your home.

If you don’t have a good flow through a room, it can be very irritating and will cause stress. Always have ample room to walk into a room and to get to where you want to sit.

You shouldn’t have to strain your neck to see the TV.
You shouldn’t have to strain your eyes to read a book.
Use a shaded lamp so you will not have a glaring bulb in your eyes.

All of these same principles are true throughout the house.  When you get up in the middle of the night you shouldn’t stub your toe because of poorly placed furniture.

I hope that you can see how a good floor plan will relieve stress and improve your life.

Since a bad floor plan can cause stress, it is very important to be sure you have a good useable traffic pattern and enough room between all your furniture.  A person will feel stress if they have to sidestep around furniture rather than freely walk through the room.  If you have a good grouping you will be set up for better conversations with your family and friends.

I design this 3D rendering to show how we could change this space and eliminate stress. The client was able to see the traffic pattern in the room with plenty of space around the furniture.

It can also cause stress if you don’t have the right lighting in your home.

Lamps are important in a room because they not only give light but also add beauty to your room.  However, some lighting can be very stark and stressful. Recessed lighting sometimes does not work well in a family room or dining room,  It is better to have decorative lighting that has a shaded bulb such as a chandelier and table lamps in a great room.

An interior designer can also help you avoid costly decorating mistakes and costly mistakes will cause stress.  They will encourage you not to follow trends blindly.  Trends come and go, but if you follow the things you love in your home, you will be much happier.

Never buy the furniture before you plan out the space.

A floor plan is essential because you need to know if your furniture items will fit comfortably in your room.

Don’t cut costs on quality materials and selections for your home.  Know that there is a difference between good value and cheap.  Do some research.  Quality materials often have features that make living easier and thus, make them worth the cost.  Seek the opinion of a good professional.

It is also very important to have a budget and your designer can help you figure out what your budget is. Remodeling does not come cheap and when you are done with your project you don’t want to feel bad because you are over budget.  That is why it is so important to set up financial planning before you start the project.

So, in summary, 4 things can help relieve stress when decorating or remodeling your home.

They are:

1,  You need a good floor plan.

2.  You need the right lighting.

3.  You need to avoid costly mistakes.

4.  You need to have a budget.
