First of all, what are the biggest decorating mistakes when buying new furniture and how do you avoid them?

Many people make the mistake of buying new furniture without planning or thinking about the final product.  Do you have a dream home in mind?  Do you have favorite colors that you want to incorporate in your home?  Do you have a specific floor plan?  Are you sure there will be plenty of room to walk around the room when you get your new furniture?

In order to avoid mistakes when buying new furniture, you need to have a plan or hire an interior designer who will help you with your plans for a dream room.

1.  Not buying quality furniture.

People say, I don’t think I need quality furniture, because I don’t want it to last forever. The problem is, a lot of the promotional furniture you see in stores may start to break down in 1 year. The other thing is it won;t be comfortable because it won’t have good cushions and it  probably won’t have good construction under the cushions. Therefore it will sit terrible.

Most people do not know how comfortable they can be with quality furniture. There is nothing like coming home after a hard day and sitting down in a comfortable piece of furniture. Also, a well made piece of furniture will look great for a long time.

2.  Buying the wrong scale furniture or too much furniture.

This is the number one mistake I see as a professional interior designer. Sometimes people will move from a small home to a larger high ceiling home and will buy the furniture too small. Sometimes people will see furniture in a large furniture store, only to get it home and find out it is too big for their home. I have had a lot of people ask me to help them after they have made this kind of mistake. I feel bad for them, but I can’t change the size of the furniture. Buying the wrong scale furniture is a costly decorating mistake.

3.  Picking the wrong colors.

People do not consider their existing colors in their home when they go to a furniture store. You do not want to pick out an ivory sofa if you have taupe carpet. It will clash. You need to consider your paint color, tile, carpet, rugs, window coverings and fabrics.

4.   Not getting the right durability for your lifestyle.

If you have kids, you don’t want to pick out a white sofa. just because you saw it on the latest decorating show. You need to think about who will use the room and how it will be used. There are many beautiful fabrics today that work well in a family room.

5. Impluse buying or buying because you can get it delivered next week.

Buying furniture without a plan is a ticket to decorating disaster. I know you want it and you want it now, but you are going to have it for a long time, so you better get it right.

6.  Not getting interior design help before you start your project.

A professional interior designer can save you money by avoiding costly mistakes. Many designers also have ways to purchase furniture that will save you money. Just ask yourself, do I want to be happy with my decorating choices? If so, you should work with a professional interior designer.
